Cropping a wide photo to 9:16 is the most destructive crop in common use, and it helps to know that before you start. Take a standard 16:9 image and cut a full-height 9:16 slice out of it: the slice is a little under a third of the original width. More than two thirds of the picture is discarded. Nothing else in everyday image work throws away that much, which is why so many vertical crops look like a mistake rather than a composition.
That arithmetic changes what a good source looks like. A wide landscape with the subject in the middle distance has nothing to give a 9:16 frame — you keep a narrow column and lose the context that made the shot work. Photos that survive are the ones with a strong vertical element already in them: a person standing, a building, a road running away from the camera, or a large area of texture that reads the same however much you remove.
The other thing to plan for is that a vertical frame is rarely shown clean. Stories, Reels, Shorts and TikTok all overlay interface on top of it — captions and profile details near the bottom, controls along one side, sometimes a header at the top. Whatever you crop, the middle of the frame is the only region you can count on being visible, so compose the subject there rather than filling the height edge to edge.
How to crop an image to a 9:16 vertical ratio

Start from the largest source you have
Drop the image into the box above. Because a 9:16 crop keeps under a third of a wide photo's width, resolution disappears fast — starting from the original file rather than a shared copy is what keeps the result sharp.

Lock the frame to 9:16
Pick the 9:16 preset. The frame holds a true vertical ratio while you drag, which matters because a crop slightly off ratio gets adjusted by the platform, and it adjusts by trimming.

Slide, do not shrink
Move the tall frame across the image to find the strongest column rather than pulling it smaller. Full frame height keeps the most pixels; shrinking it to fit an awkward subject costs resolution you cannot get back.

Crop and export
Download the vertical result. Pixels inside the frame are untouched, so any softness comes from the source, not the crop.
Pro tip: Keep the subject in the vertical middle third, not centred in the full frame. Every vertical surface layers interface over the top and bottom of the image — captions, handles, buttons, progress indicators — and the exact amount differs between apps and changes with updates. Composing so that the meaningful part of the picture sits in the central band means one crop survives all of them, instead of needing a different version per platform.
Troubleshooting: If the crop looks soft, the cause is almost always the source rather than the tool: keeping under a third of the width of an already-modest photo leaves very few pixels, and the platform then enlarges that to fill a phone screen. Crop from the biggest original you can find. If the framing feels wrong no matter where you slide it, the photo is genuinely horizontal in composition — a different source will beat any amount of adjustment. And if part of the image is hidden after posting, it is sitting under the app's interface; move the subject towards the middle.
