Resize Product Photos for Shopify

Dimensions are pre-set to 2048×2048 — the square size Shopify says displays best. Resizing runs on your device, so unreleased product shots stay private.

Shopify is more permissive than most sellers realise: product and collection images can be anything up to 5000×5000 px — 25 megapixels — as long as the file is under 20 MB. What it recommends is narrower. For square product images, Shopify's own documentation says 2048×2048 px "usually displays best", which is large enough for the zoom viewer to stay crisp without pushing files into territory that slows the storefront down.

The reason to resize before uploading is not the limit — it is speed. A 24-megapixel photo straight from a camera can be 8–12 MB, and Shopify will accept it happily, then serve a scaled copy to every visitor. Uploading dozens of those makes the admin sluggish, backups larger, and any theme that requests an oversized variant slower to render. Resizing to 2048×2048 first gets you the same on-screen result from a fraction of the bytes.

Shopify image sizes and limits

These are Shopify's published numbers for product and collection media. Theme-specific banner dimensions are deliberately not listed — those vary by theme, and Shopify does not publish one universal hero size.

ImageSizeNotes
Square product image2048×2048Shopify's stated recommendation — square images "usually display best" at this size. Crop to 1:1 first with Crop Image to Square so nothing is distorted on the way.
Maximum resolution5000×5000The hard ceiling for product and collection images, equivalently 25 megapixels. Anything larger is rejected at upload.
Maximum file size20 MBFiles must be under 20 MB to be added at all. Well-compressed 2048×2048 JPGs land around 200–500 KB, so this is rarely the binding constraint.
Collection image2048×2048Governed by the same limits as product images. Keeping collection tiles on the same square grid is what makes a category page look deliberate rather than assembled.
Accepted formatsJPEG, PNG, WebP…Shopify also accepts PSD, TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG and HEIC, plus animated GIF and WebP. JPEG for photography, PNG when you need transparency, WebP for the smallest photographic files.

Shopify serves resized variants of whatever you upload, so the upload size sets the ceiling on quality — not what visitors download. Uploading at 2048×2048 gives the zoom viewer room to work without shipping a 12 MB original.

How to resize product photos for Shopify

  1. 1

    Crop to a square first

Product grids look uneven the moment one image is a different shape. Crop each photo to 1:1 before resizing so every tile in the collection lines up.

  2. 2

    Resize to 2048×2048

The preset above is already set to it. Drop the photos in and the output matches Shopify's recommended square exactly.

  3. 3

    Compress before uploading

A 2048×2048 JPG at high quality still compresses to a few hundred kilobytes with no visible difference. This is the step that keeps the storefront fast.

  4. 4

    Upload to Shopify

Add the finished files to the product in your Shopify admin. Every image is under the limits, so nothing is rejected and the zoom viewer stays sharp.

Pro tip: Shoot or crop with a little margin around the product rather than filling the frame edge to edge. Shopify themes crop product images differently across the grid, the product page, and cart thumbnails, and a product that touches the edge of a 1:1 file will be clipped in at least one of those places. Consistent framing across a catalogue reads as more professional than any single perfect photo.

Troubleshooting: If Shopify refuses an image, check the two hard limits before anything else: over 5000×5000 px (25 megapixels) or over 20 MB and it will not upload. Resizing to 2048×2048 clears both by a wide margin. If images upload fine but look soft on the product page, the source was smaller than the theme's display size and got upscaled — resize down from the original camera file rather than from a copy you already shrank.

The rest of the store workflow: Compress Image is the step between resizing and uploading, Batch Image Resizer handles a whole catalogue in one pass, and Crop Image to Square gets rectangular shots onto the 1:1 grid. Selling on more than one marketplace? Resize Image for Amazon covers that platform's stricter minimums.

Frequently asked questions

What size should Shopify product images be?

Shopify recommends 2048×2048 px for square product images, which it says "usually displays best". The absolute ceiling is 5000×5000 px or 25 megapixels, with a file size under 20 MB. 2048×2048 is the practical sweet spot: sharp in the zoom viewer, small enough to keep the store fast.

What is Shopify's image upload limit?

Product and collection images must be under 20 MB and no larger than 5000×5000 px, equivalently 25 megapixels. Both are hard limits — an image over either is rejected at upload rather than silently downscaled.

Do image sizes affect Shopify store speed?

Yes, though indirectly. Shopify generates and serves resized variants, so visitors rarely download your full original — but oversized uploads still bloat the admin, slow bulk operations, and cause themes that request large variants to ship more bytes than needed. Since image weight is usually the largest part of a product page, resizing and compressing before upload is the highest-leverage speed change most stores can make.

Should Shopify product photos be square?

Square is the safest default because Shopify's own recommendation is written for square images, and a consistent 1:1 grid is what makes a collection page look uniform. Themes crop to their own ratios anyway, so supplying everything at the same shape is what removes the inconsistency — mixed portrait and landscape sources are where ragged grids come from.

Are my product photos uploaded anywhere when I resize them here?

No. Resizing happens entirely inside your browser on your own device. Unreleased product shots are never sent to ImagePilot, stored, or logged — the only upload is the one you make to Shopify yourself afterwards.
