An avatar is the smallest image you will ever publish, and that is the entire design problem. Forums, Discord, game launchers and comment threads render it a few dozen pixels across — smaller than the icon of the app you are reading this in. A crop that looks balanced on your screen at full size becomes an unreadable smudge at that scale. Cropping for an avatar is therefore not about finding a flattering composition; it is about deciding how much you can throw away and still have the subject read at thumbnail size.
The usable rule is that the subject should fill most of the frame, and that is a framing decision rather than a pixel one. Discord's own guidance asks for an avatar of around 200×200 pixels at minimum, which is a floor for upload quality — it tells you nothing about how tightly to crop. The 512×512 figure repeated across avatar guides is a community convention, not something in Discord's documentation, so it is worth knowing before you rebuild an entire avatar set around it.
One crop covers every destination if you get the shape right. Discord and most modern apps mask the avatar into a circle; older forums and some game clients leave it square. A square crop with the subject centred and clear of the corners survives both, because a circle inscribed in a square only ever removes the corners. Anything you care about that sits near an edge is what disappears first.
How to crop a photo into an avatar

Open your photo
Drop it into the box above. Your browser decodes it locally — the file is not uploaded, which matters when the photo is a picture of your face.

Lock the frame to 1:1
Pick the square preset. A square is the only shape that works whether the platform shows the avatar as a square or masks it into a circle, so this is the setting to use even for services that display squares.

Crop in tighter than feels right
Drag a corner inwards until the subject fills most of the frame. Head-and-shoulders reads at avatar size; a full-body shot does not. Leave a little headroom, because the circular mask trims the top corners.

Download the square
The pixels inside the frame come out exactly as they went in — cropping removes area, it does not resample. Upload the result wherever you need it.
Pro tip: Judge the crop at the size it will actually be seen, not at the size you are editing it. After downloading, look at the file as a thumbnail in your file manager, or shrink the preview until it is roughly the size of a browser tab icon. If you cannot tell what the picture is at that scale, take another twenty percent off the edges and crop again. Almost every weak avatar is a crop that was judged full-screen. When a service also demands exact output dimensions, hand the finished square to Resize Image rather than re-cropping.
Troubleshooting: A blurry avatar is nearly always an upscaling problem rather than a cropping one: taking a small square out of an already-small photo leaves very few pixels, and the platform then stretches that up to its display size. Always crop from the largest copy of the photo you have, not from one that has already been shared and re-compressed. If instead the avatar looks off-centre after uploading, the platform applied its circular mask over your framing — re-crop with the subject smaller and more central so the corners have nothing important in them.

What size should an avatar be?

Should an avatar be square or circular?
Always crop it square. Circular avatars are produced by the platform applying a round mask over a square image — you cannot upload a circle, and there is no benefit to trying. Crop to 1:1 with the subject away from the corners and the same file works on services that show squares and services that show circles.
Why does my avatar look blurry after uploading it?
Because it was enlarged, not because it was cropped. Cropping only discards pixels outside the frame; the ones you keep are untouched. If the square you produced is smaller than the size the platform displays, it gets stretched, and stretching is what creates blur. Crop from the highest-resolution original you have.
Are my photos uploaded to a server when I crop an avatar?
No. The crop runs entirely inside your browser on your own device. The file is never uploaded, stored, or logged, and the tool keeps working with your connection switched off. Nothing is transmitted anywhere unless you upload the finished avatar somewhere yourself.
Can I use the same avatar across every site?
Yes, provided it is square and the subject is centred with clear space around it. That combination survives both a square display and a circular mask, so one file covers Discord, forums, game clients and most social profiles. Only rebuild it per platform when a service publishes a hard requirement, which is rare for avatars.
