A WhatsApp display picture is seen at a smaller size than almost any other photo you publish. It appears mostly as a tiny circle beside each row of your chat list — a few millimetres across on a phone — and only rarely at the larger size you see while editing it. That mismatch is why so many DPs look fine when set and unrecognisable in the list: they were framed at the size you were looking at, not the size everyone else sees.
The shape is fixed and the reason is geometry rather than policy. WhatsApp shows the picture inside a circle, and a circle can only be drawn inside a square. If you hand it a rectangle it squares the image first using its own centring, then applies the round mask — two decisions taken for you. Cropping to 1:1 yourself replaces both with one you control, and it is the single change that fixes most badly cropped DPs.
It also removes about a fifth of what you upload, which is worth picturing before you frame. A circle inscribed in a square touches the middle of each edge and misses all four corners, so anything sitting near a corner is guaranteed not to appear. Crop looser than instinct suggests, keep the face centred, and let the mask take the corners rather than part of your head.
How to crop a photo for your WhatsApp profile picture
- 1
Add your photo
Drop it into the box above. It is decoded by your own browser and never uploaded — which matters more here than almost anywhere, since a DP is usually a personal photo of you or your family.
- 2
Lock to 1:1
Choose the square preset. This is the shape WhatsApp will cut its circle from, so producing it yourself is what stops the app centring on the wrong thing.
- 3
Frame for the small circle
Crop close enough that a face is readable at chat-list size, but leave a margin so the circular mask does not clip the top of the head. Straighten a tilted shot with the rotation slider — tilt is far more visible inside a circle.
- 4
Download and set it
Save the square and set it as your DP. The pixels inside the frame are unchanged from your original, so the crop itself costs nothing in quality.
Pro tip: Check the crop at chat-list size before you commit to it. After downloading, look at the file as a small thumbnail in your file manager, or send it to yourself and glance at the preview. If you cannot tell who it is at that scale, crop tighter on the face and try again. Judging a DP at full screen is the reason so many of them read as a vague blur in a contact list.
Troubleshooting: If WhatsApp cut off part of your face after uploading, it applied its circular mask over your framing and the corners of your square are simply not shown — re-crop with the subject smaller and more central. If the photo looks stretched instead, it was resized into square dimensions somewhere rather than cropped, and resizing distorts faces while cropping never does. If it looks soft or blocky, the source was already small or heavily compressed before the crop; start from the original photo rather than one that has been forwarded through chats, since each pass re-compresses it.
The same square is covered in more depth on Crop Image to Square (1:1), which lists the square sizes various platforms publish. Crop Image for Instagram Profile and Crop Photo for Avatar apply the identical circular-mask thinking elsewhere. Sending the photo rather than setting it as a DP? Compress Image for WhatsApp gets a large photo down to a sensible size first, or use the full Crop Image tool for free-form framing.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a WhatsApp profile picture be?
Square is the requirement that matters. WhatsApp displays the DP inside a circle cut from a square, and the resolution it is shown at is far smaller than any photo you would upload — so crop a 1:1 square at a comfortable size from your original and let WhatsApp scale it down. Framing is what decides how it looks, not the pixel count.
Why does WhatsApp crop my profile picture badly?
Because it has to make the image square before it can apply the circular mask, and when you supply a rectangle it does that by centring — which is rarely where your face is. Uploading an image that is already square removes the step, so the circle is cut from your framing instead of WhatsApp's.
How do I stop my face being cut off in a WhatsApp DP?
Leave more space around the head than looks necessary. The circular mask removes all four corners of the square you upload, so a face that fills the frame edge to edge loses its top and sides. Centre the face and keep it clear of the edges, and nothing important lands in the part that gets trimmed.
Is my photo uploaded when I crop it here?
No. The crop runs entirely inside your browser on your own device — the photo is never uploaded, stored, or logged, and the tool keeps working with your connection switched off. For a personal photo of your face or your family, that is the difference worth caring about.
Can I use the same square for WhatsApp, Instagram and LinkedIn?
Yes. All three cut a circle from a square, so one well-framed 1:1 crop works across them. Just make sure the subject is centred with clear space around it, because each platform trims exactly the same corners when it applies its mask.
