An aspect ratio is only the relationship between width and height — 3:2 means three units across for every two down, at any size. That is worth stating plainly because it explains why a ratio and a pixel size are different problems. Getting the ratio right decides whether your image fits its slot without anything being trimmed; the pixel size decides only how much detail is in it. Most framing frustration comes from trying to solve both at once.

The lock is worth using even when your target is unusual, though, because eyeballing a ratio does not work. A frame you drag by hand will be a few pixels off, and whatever displays it then either letterboxes the difference or crops it away — which is precisely the invisible edge-trimming people blame on the platform. If your destination has a fixed shape, lock to it and move the frame; use free-form only when nothing downstream is enforcing a ratio.

Pro tip: When you know the exact output pixels you need, still crop to the ratio here first and set the size afterwards rather than trying to hit both in one move. Cropping to the right shape from your full-resolution original and then resampling once, in Resize Image, gives a cleaner result than cropping to approximately the right pixels by hand. It also means one crop can serve several output sizes — the ratio stays valid however far down you scale it.

Troubleshooting: If your image is trimmed after uploading it somewhere, the crop ratio did not match the slot and the destination corrected it. Find the ratio the destination expects and lock to it rather than adjusting by eye. If the image looks stretched instead of trimmed, it was resized into the target dimensions rather than cropped to them — resizing changes proportions, cropping removes area, and only the second keeps faces and objects in shape. If a rotated crop has transparent or white wedges in the corners, the frame extended past the rotated image; pull it in slightly.
