"Converting" an aspect ratio is the most quietly misleading phrase in image editing, because there is no operation that changes a picture's shape without cost. There are only three things that can actually happen, and every tool that claims to convert ratios is doing one of them: it crops, it pads, or it stretches. Knowing which one you want before you start is the whole job.

Cropping keeps the proportions of everything inside the frame and removes what falls outside it. That is almost always the right answer, and it is why the aspect-ratio question so often turns out to be a cropping question. Padding keeps the entire image and adds bars to fill the new shape — useful when nothing may be lost, as with artwork or documents, and unacceptable when the result has to look full-bleed. Stretching keeps everything and distorts all of it, which is what happens when you type mismatched dimensions with the ratio lock off. It is essentially never what anyone wants, and faces are where it shows first.

Once you have chosen, the arithmetic is easy. A ratio is a shape, so any dimensions that divide to the same value are equally valid: 1920×1080, 1280×720 and 3840×2160 are all 16:9. Pick the ratio first, then choose the pixel dimensions based on how much detail your source actually has — deciding both at once is what produces images that are the right size and the wrong shape.

Troubleshooting: If faces look wider or narrower than they should, the image was stretched — the ratio lock was off and the dimensions you entered did not match the source proportions. If part of the picture disappeared without you asking, something downstream cropped it to fit its own ratio, which is what platforms do when your image is the wrong shape. If you have unwanted bars along two edges, the image was padded rather than cropped. All three are the same underlying situation: the source shape and the target shape did not match, and something had to give.
