4:3 is the ratio most people are already shooting without realising it. Phone cameras commonly default to it, because it matches the shape of the sensor behind the lens — the 16:9 option in the same camera app is usually a 4:3 capture with the top and bottom thrown away. If your photo came off a phone with default settings, cropping it to 4:3 often means confirming the shape it already has rather than changing it.

It survives as a working ratio because it is a compromise rather than a statement. 4:3 is noticeably taller than widescreen and noticeably wider than square, so a subject fits without the cramping a 1:1 crop imposes or the empty flanks a 16:9 crop introduces. That is why it persists for documents, product shots, presentation slides that are not video-first, and anything destined for print, where paper proportions have never followed screens.

The practical reason to crop to it deliberately is consistency. A gallery, a catalogue, or a set of slides where every image is the same shape reads as considered; one where the ratios wander reads as assembled from whatever was to hand. Locking each image to 4:3 costs a little from the edges and buys a grid that lines up.

Troubleshooting: If a 4:3 crop leaves your subject looking cramped, the source was probably widescreen: going from 16:9 to 4:3 removes a quarter of the width, and a subject placed near an edge falls outside the new frame.
